Roadmap for scanning documents to store in compliance with HIPAA

  1. Get a really good scanner. I like the Fujitsu ScanSnap iX500
  2. Sign up for Citrix ShareFile (the cheapest one that will work)
  3. (Optional) You might want to get a separate hard drive to scan the documents to – then you can use ShareFile’s sync feature while you’re scanning and lock up the hard drive physically when you’re done to increase security (and avoid keeping sensitive files on a laptop). This is a commodity purchase, but here’s a good, cheap external drive

Ultimately, you set up the scanner to scan everything to a specific location (ideally on that external drive), and then you set up ShareFile sync to store all the information from that location in the cloud.
